Toyota & Honda Ignition Coils UF487 / UF495: Which Coil Fits Your Engine | VeloCore

What UF487 and UF495 Actually Are

UF487 and UF495 are the SAE / Toyota coil-family designations printed on the coil boot. They tell you the physical shape and connector, not the car — a single coil number crosses many Toyota and Lexus engines. If your coil is marked UF487 or UF495, you already know the form factor you need.

  • UF487 — the common 4-cyl / V6 coil used across a wide range of Toyota and Lexus engines (2.4L 2AZ-FE, 2.5L 2AR-FE, 3.5L 2GR-FE and more). Often sold as a coil + iridium plug kit.
  • UF495 — the coil used on the 4.0L 1GR-FE V6 family (4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia) and other applications; commonly packaged as a 6-piece set with plugs for a full bank replacement.

The right move is to confirm the coil number on your old part, then pick the direct-fit replacement that matches it — which is exactly what the VeloCore sets below do.

Symptoms of a Failing Ignition Coil

Symptom What you feel / see Most common cause
Random misfire, rough idle Bouncing tach at idle, vibration through the seat Cracked coil boot, arcing to ground
Loss of power under load Sluggish acceleration, hesitation on hills Weak spark from a tired coil
Poor fuel economy More frequent fill-ups, same driving Misfire dumps unburned fuel
Engine code P0300–P0306 Flashing CEL, stored misfire codes One or more coils not firing
Visible arcing or white crust Blue flashes at night, white residue on boot Boot carbon tracking

When a coil fails it usually sets a cylinder-specific misfire code. The quickest field test is to swap the suspect coil to a different cylinder; if the code moves with the coil, the coil is bad.

How to Replace Toyota / Lexus Coils

Coil replacement is one of the easier engine-bay jobs on these platforms — no special tools beyond a 10mm socket and a torque wrench.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and let the ECU power down for a minute.
  2. Remove the engine cover (if fitted) to reach the coil packs on the valve cover.
  3. Unplug each coil by releasing the locking tab and pulling straight out — do not yank the wire.
  4. Unbolt the 10mm coil hold-down and lift the coil straight up. Inspect the boot for cracks or carbon tracking.
  5. Seat the new coil with a dab of dielectric grease on the boot, torque the 10mm to spec, and reconnect the plug.
  6. Clear codes and road-test. If you replaced a set, a full drive cycle should show smooth idle and no pending misfires.
We do not publish a single torque figure: coil-bolt torque varies by engine. Look up the spec for your exact 2AZ / 2AR / 2GR / 1GR application and torque to that value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I replace just the bad coil or the whole set?

If one coil has failed from age, the others are the same mileage and often follow. Replacing the full bank (with plugs) restores even power and avoids a second teardown a few months later.

Will a new coil clear a P0300–P0306 code?

If the coil is the cause, yes — after clearing the code. But P030x can also come from plugs, fuel, or compression. Always swap the coil between cylinders first to confirm it follows the coil before ordering.

Are UF487 and UF495 interchangeable?

No. They are different form factors for different engine families. Match the number printed on your old coil; do not guess by vehicle alone.

Do I need to gap the included plugs?

Iridium plugs ship pre-gapped. Verify the gap against the vehicle spec, but do not re-gap aggressively — the fine-wire tip bends easily.

Fitment Guarantee

Ordering the wrong coil number is the most common reason a Toyota/Lexus tune-up stalls. Every VeloCore coil set is sold against its OE number and confirmed fitment list. If it is not a match for your VIN, our fitment team will catch it before it ships — and if a verified part ever fails to fit, we make it right. Check your fitment with us before you buy.
