How to Test a Bad Alternator: Symptoms & P2503/P0620 | VeloCore

Why Alternators Fail
The alternator is the engine-driven generator that keeps the 12-volt battery charged and runs every electrical load while the engine runs. Inside, a rotor, stator, diode rectifier, and voltage regulator convert mechanical rotation into DC power. Common failure modes:
- Worn bushings / commutator. The rear bearing or brush pack wears past spec, causing intermittent output.
- Failed diodes. One or more rectifier diodes short or open, so the alternator either over- or under-charges and can drain the battery while you drive.
- Bad voltage regulator. Output drifts out of range, cooking the battery or starving the system.
- Contaminated or overheated unit. Oil leaks and sustained high under-hood heat shorten life on many transverse V6 applications.
Symptoms of a Bad Alternator
| Symptom | What you see / hear | Most common cause |
|---|---|---|
| Dim or flickering lights | Headlights pulse with RPM | Low / unstable output |
| Battery warning light | Red battery icon on dash | Charging-circuit fault |
| Dead battery / no-start after jump | Starts on a jump, dies again | Alternator not charging |
| Whining from the engine bay | Noise that tracks engine speed | Worn bearing or pulley |
| Electrical gremlins | Windows slow, radio resets | Voltage sag under load |
When the charging system misbehaves, the ECU usually logs a generic OBD-II code. The ones most directly tied to the alternator and its control circuit:
| Code | Meaning | Most common cause |
|---|---|---|
| P0562 | System Voltage Low | Under-charging alternator / bad connection |
| P2503 | Charging System Voltage High | Over-charging (failed regulator / diodes) |
| P0620 | Generator Control Circuit Malfunction | Regulator / control wiring fault |
| P0621 / P0622 | Generator Field Circuit | Field winding or driver fault |
These are generic public OBD-II definitions. A P0562 can also come from a weak battery or a loose main cable, so always load-test the battery and check connections before condemning the alternator.
How to Test an Alternator
You can confirm most alternator problems with a basic digital multimeter — no scan tool required for a first pass.
- Resting battery voltage. With the engine off, a healthy 12V battery reads around 12.6V. Much lower means the battery itself is weak.
- Charging voltage. Start the engine and measure across the battery. A working system should sit in the normal charging band; if it is near battery voltage with no rise, the alternator is not charging.
- Load test. Turn on the headlights, blower, and rear defrost. Charging voltage should hold steady, not collapse.
- Diode ripple. On the AC millivolt range, a healthy alternator shows very low AC ripple; a high reading points to failed diodes.
- Belts and connections. Inspect the serpentine belt and both battery terminals — a slipping belt or corroded cable mimics alternator failure.
We do not publish a single "pass/fail" voltage number because the correct charging band varies slightly by make and ambient temperature. Confirm the specification for your vehicle in the factory service information and compare your reading to that value.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a new alternator clear a P0562 or P2503 code?
Often yes, when the alternator is the root cause. But clear the code only after confirming output and checking the battery and main cables — a weak battery or loose ground can set the same codes.
Can I drive with a failing alternator?
Not far. Once it stops charging, the car runs on battery alone and will stall within minutes to a few miles, often stranding you. Replace it promptly.
Do I need to reprogram the ECU after replacement?
On most of these applications, no scan-tool reset is required — the new alternator is a direct electrical swap. If your model uses a learned battery/charging strategy, follow the procedure in the service information.
How do I know the amperage I need?
Match the amperage of the original unit for your trim. VeloCore lists the OE reference for each application so you can confirm against the decal on your old alternator.
Fitment Guarantee
A wrong-amperage or wrong-mount alternator is a return waiting to happen. Every VeloCore alternator is sold against its OE number and confirmed fitment. If it is not a match for your VIN, our fitment team will catch it before it ships. Verify your fitment with us before you buy.
